Creating content can be a great way to make money online, but how do you get started? In this post, we’ll walk through the steps to becoming a content creator—from deciding what type of content you want to create and when your audience should consume it, to monetizing that content by selling products or services.

Think about the type of content you want to create.
The first step in creating a content marketing strategy is deciding what type of content you want to produce. When considering this, think about both the content you enjoy consuming and what your audience might find valuable.
If there’s something that genuinely excites you, chances are others will feel the same! Maybe they just haven’t discovered it yet. Your role as a creator is to present that information in an engaging, accessible way while determining how much time and effort it will take.
Also, consider whether a particular type of content is both enjoyable for you and valuable for your audience. Some ideas might seem great in theory but could turn out to be more effort than they’re worth—or the opposite. Finding that balance is key to long-term success.
Creating content that will capture the viewer's attention.
Step 1: Create content that is relevant to your audience.
Step 2: Create content that is unique and interesting.
Step 3: Create content that is relatable.
Step 4: Create content that is shareable.
Step 5: Create content that is valuable (to the viewer).
Step 6: If you can do all of these things, then you’re doing it right!

Making money on Instagram, TikTok & YouTube
You can make money on Instagram in a variety of ways. Some of them are passive, while others require more work and effort.
Selling products on Instagram: You can sell products directly through your Instagram page or via affiliate links.
Monetizing your Instagram page: There are many ways to monetize an account, including selling ads and taking sponsored posts (a deal where you agree to post about someone else’s product), as well as getting paid for being an influencer (more on this below). In this case, though, focus on how to use your existing platform as a way to generate income rather than creating one from scratch.

How to become a content creator?
You have a unique perspective, and you have the power to share it with the world. You may not know exactly what kind of content you want to create yet, and that’s okay—most content creators don’t have it all figured out right away. You’re not alone.
The first step is understanding your audience.
• What do they want?
• How do they prefer to consume information?
Once you’ve answered these questions, it’s time to develop a content strategy:
• How often will you post on each platform?
• Do you need your own website, or can you rely on social media?
• Is there a niche market where your audience might also be interested in your content?
These questions need answers before you start publishing, whether it’s launching a blog, podcast, or YouTube channel.
Once the logistics are in place, it’s time for execution—the fun part where you bring your ideas to life and make things happen!

Think About Your Income Goals
Your income goals will depend on several factors: the size of your audience, how much you can charge for your content, and whether you have an existing brand.
To make a living as a content creator, you need to produce a lot of content—more than most people realize. Consistency is key. You must regularly create and release content to build momentum and sustain your audience’s interest.
Think About Your Audience and Where They Consume Content
The next step is to identify where your audience spends most of their time online.
• What platforms do they use the most?
• What types of content do they engage with—articles, videos, podcasts, or social media posts?
• Where do they share content that interests them?
Understanding the platform and its community is crucial before deciding what type of content to create.
For example, if you’re making videos for YouTube, consider how long viewers typically watch (around 10 minutes per video) and how much time they spend on the platform (about an hour per day). These insights can help you determine the best topics and formats to keep your audience engaged.

Create a YouTube channel.
YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world, and it's growing faster than any other search engine out there. It's also the world's second-largest social media platform, with over 1 billion users, so you can imagine how many eyeballs are on YouTube at any given moment of the day! In fact, according to a report from ComScore from February 2019, YouTube reached more people than all U.S. television networks combined (including broadcast and cable networks). That's why we're going to focus on creating content for this platform because there is a huge opportunity for growth here.
Create a blog or website to host your content.
Now that you have polished off your first piece of content, it's time to create a website or blog where you can host all of your content.
WordPress is a great platform for creating a blog or website. You can choose between hosting the site yourself or using a service like Squarespace, Wix, and Weebly. If you're not tech-savvy and don't want to manage server space or maintain a web host (which will cost money), then one of those services may be more suitable for you.
Your domain name should be easy to remember, so try not to use something too abstract like "content creator blog." This makes the site harder for readers who are looking for what they want in Google search results if they weren't directed by someone else here specifically. It also helps if there aren't any other sites out there with similar names, so people don't accidentally stumble upon yours thinking it was something else instead! Make sure that when people go onto mobile devices, they still have access; otherwise, they'll leave without reading anything. Their phone won't display the website correctly on their screen, which sucks because now everyone loses.
Apply to become an Amazon influencer
To get started as an Amazon influencer, you'll need to apply for the program. If your application is approved and you're accepted into the program, you can start making money by sharing your opinions about products on Amazon.
You may already be familiar with Amazon's review system: Users can share their experiences with a product in its own dedicated section of the website. These reviews can help shoppers make informed decisions about whether or not they should buy that item. But usually, if someone has an opinion on something (especially something they've bought), they'll tell their friends about it—or even just anyone who will listen! This is where influencers come in handy: They're essentially paid promoters whose job is to spread word-of-mouth recommendations through social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram.
Publish a book through Amazon's self-publishing service.
Amazon is the most popular online marketplace, so publishing a book on Amazon is a smart move. Publishing your book through Amazon’s self-publishing service is free, and they give you all the tools you need to make your book look great. You can also earn money from Kindle Unlimited (which pays authors based on how many pages readers read).
Start an Etsy shop.
Etsy is a great platform to sell your crafts. It has a large audience, which means you can make money from it. You may need to come up with some product ideas, but the process isn't very hard.
Etsy's sister site, ArtFire, also allows you to sell your art on their site (and it’s free). It's another great way for artists of all kinds—including writers—to build an audience and start earning an income from their work.

Sell your products on other sites like Fiverr or Gumroad.
Fiverr and Gumroad are great places to sell your content if you can’t come up with a good brand name. The reason is that they make it easy for customers to support creators directly by buying their goods, as opposed to going through an intermediary like Patreon or PayPal (which takes a cut). You can use these two platforms as an alternative income source while building up your audience on YouTube.
Even if you don't have a huge following, you can make money from creating content, as long as you're strategic about where and how you do it.
If you’re someone who loves to make videos and write blog posts, then you already have a headstart on the competition. But even if you don’t have hundreds of thousands of followers yet, there are some ways that can help boost your income as a content creator.
In fact, I’d say the best thing about being a content creator is that it can be done remotely and at your own pace—so long as you have an idea worth sharing!
Figure out where to post your content online: This part might sound obvious, but it’s important to note which platforms will be most receptive to what kinds of topics. For example, if you want people to watch video tutorials on YouTube or read posts about makeup on Instagram (like me), think strategically about where those people hang out online, so they'll see what you're creating. And don't forget other social media channels like Facebook groups, too—they may not all be as popular as Instagram. Still, they could become more popular in years ahead, so it's always smart to have a presence there too.
There you have it! If you follow these tips, we're sure you'll be able to make a living as a content creator. Remember to think about your audience, where they work best consuming content and what kind of products or services they'd buy from an influencer like yourself. One last thing: don't be afraid of failure! It's important that we all try our hand at different things before settling down into one career path (or five).
